Dream fend off Valkyries to force first Game 7 in WNBA Finals History

The Atlanta Dream turned Game 6 of the WNBA Finals into a first-quarter rout and held on for an 80-69 win over the Golden State Valkyries. The series is tied 3-3, and everything now comes down to Game 7 in San Francisco.

Atlanta, facing elimination, scored 32 points in the opening quarter against 15 for Golden State and led 46-26 at halftime. The Valkyries trimmed the margin in the second half, outscoring the Dream 43-34, but never got closer than the 11 points they trailed by at the end. Their biggest lead of the night was 2 points.

Three-point shooting did the damage. Atlanta hit 13 of 30 from deep (43.3%), while Golden State made 7 of 27 and shot 31.4% overall. Allisha Gray led the Dream with 23 points, going 5-for-7 from three, and Rhyne Howard added 21 on 4-of-6 from deep with a perfect 5-for-5 at the line.

Angel Reese had an inefficient night, shooting 5-of-18, but she finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. The Dream also blocked 8 shots to Golden State’s 2 and scored 18 points off turnovers.

Gabby Williams scored 26 for the Valkyries on 8-of-22 shooting. Tiffany Hayes added 15, and Laeticia Amihere grabbed 10 rebounds. Veronica Burton, who scored 8 points, shot 2-for-13.

Golden State had taken a 3-2 lead with a 64-55 win in Game 5. Atlanta’s response was its second blowout of the series, after a 97-71 win in Game 3.

Game 7 tips off Saturday night in San Francisco (3:00 a.m. Sunday in Riyadh). The Valkyries have home-court advantage in a series where Atlanta has won by 14, 26 and 11 and Golden State has won three tight games.
