Sen. Bato dela Rosa the “Top Senate Absentee”

Pie Gonzaga, reporting for Rolling Stone Philippines;

How much is a senator’s salary in the Philippines? The Compensation and Position Classification Act of 1989 assigns senators and congressmen a salary grade of 31. This means that they earn P293,191 to P334,059 per month.

The Senate president and House speaker are assigned a salary grade of 32, which puts their range at P347,888 to P398,686 monthly.

Let’s assume that Sen. Bato dela Rosa’s salary is Php293,191/month, and “July 28, 2025 to March 18, 2026” is 7 months and 18 days, that means that he earned roughly Php76,900 per session that he attended.

If this was in “any” University, you will need to drop the subject and if this is any corporation in the Philippines, tardiness is “ground for disciplinary action and up to termination” of employment.

Nuggets defeat Spurs 136-134 powered by Jokic’s 40-points Double-Double

In a high-stakes game with playoff-level intensity, the Denver Nuggets edged the San Antonio Spurs 136–134 in an overtime thriller on Saturday night. The game served as a masterclass from the NBA’s top two MVP candidates, Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama, who traded blows in OT.

Jokić was nearly flawless, exploding for 40 points, 13 assists, and 8 rebounds. Most impressively, he became the first center in NBA history to record a 40-point, 10-assist game without committing a single turnover. His late-game brilliance fueled a Nuggets comeback from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit (107 – 96) with 9-mins remaining in regulation.

Wembanyama, returning from a one-game absence, was equally transcendent. The young star put up 34 points, 18 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 blocks, anchoring a Spurs defense that held the lead for most of the regulation. Despite his dominant interior presence, Wembanyama’s potential game-winner at the buzzer clanged off the rim, leading to a Denver-controlled overtime. The victory snapped the Spurs’ 11-game winning streak and kept Denver within half a game of the Western Conference’s third seed.

Here’s the last 18-second of the 4ht Qtr and OT.

Spurs routs Warriors, for 10th straight win (127-113)

The San Antonio Spurs continued their late-season surge on Wednesday, defeating a short-handed Golden State Warriors squad 127–113. Led by Victor Wembanyama’s dominant 41 points and 18 rebounds, the Spurs secured their 10th consecutive victory.

The win bolsters San Antonio’s pursuit of the Western Conference’s top seed. Sitting at 58–18, they remain just two games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder. Conversely, the Warriors (36–40) are in survival mode. Currently holding the 10th seed, they occupy the final Play-In spot with a potential showdown with the Portland Trail Blazers. Without their primary scoring threats, Golden State struggled to match San Antonio’s efficiency, which saw seven players score in double figures.

Reports suggest Stephen Curry is on track to return from his knee injury before the regular season ends on April 12. Curry has resumed full-squad scrimmaging and on-court drills. His return is critical for a Warriors team likely facing a “win-or-go-home” Play-In scenario, providing the veteran leadership and firepower needed to spark a deep postseason run.

Iran to allow Philippine-bound and Philippine-flagged ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz

Cristina Chi via @PhilstarNews;

BREAKING: Iran assures the Philippines that it will allow Philippine-bound and Philippine-flagged ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Department of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement Thursday, April 2, that Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi today to discuss “stronger bilateral cooperation on all fronts.”

“During the call, the Iranian Foreign Minister assured the Secretary that Iran will allow the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage through the Strait of Hormuz of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy sources, and all Filipino seafarers,” the DFA says.

Great work by our DFA specially Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro!

This should “hopefully” limit further petrol price hikes in the country.

Opinion: Friendly reminder about your Facebook and other/all Social Media Account

There’s an “old” adage “if it’s free, you’re the product.” While social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok offer a great way to global connection at “no monetary cost”, the “free” price tag is an illusion that most social media users do not understand. In reality, the user (you) are the product, your attention/time and data which are harvested by the social media network for their “main/actual” customer are the advertisers.

Posting “legal notice”, in the hopes of making it viral circulates on social media feeds, with users/influencers posting statements like: “I HEREBY DECLARE THAT I DO NOT GIVE MY PERMISSION FOR META TO USE MY DATA.” While these posts provide a “false” sense of agency, they are legally meaningless. A status update cannot unilaterally rewrite a signed contract. Because you agreed to facebook’s Terms, Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy. the moment you create your account, you already gave the platform your consent. These platforms operate on a “take it or leave it” basis; the only way to stop or legally “revoke” permission is to delete your account.

Here’s what Facebook says when you delete your account;

Deleting your account is permanent. When you delete your account, your main profile and everything else you’ve added will be permanently deleted. You won’t be able to retrieve anything you’ve added. All additional profiles, Messenger and all of your messages will also be deleted.

But even if you delete your account, there is no guarantee that all your data will be deleted from the system.

We have to remember that Facebook and other social media platforms pay engineers and designers tons of money, to keep you “the product” engaged for as long as possible and as often as possible. Which is why we have this thing called “Attention Economy”, where algorithms are built to trigger dopamine responses, leading to habits like “doomscrolling.” For the modern digital Filipino, it’s important to know that social media isn’t a free public service. It is a private marketplace where your time, privacy, and data are the real money being spent.

Google unveils AI Inbox in Gmail

  • Topics to catch up on: This section gives you a quick summary of important updates. It helps you stay updated on things like upcoming travel, restaurant reservations, purchase confirmations, and more.

Google added that AI Inbox is currently available to select “trusted testers” in the United States and will expand to more people in the coming months.

US Visa Applicants in the Philippines are required to set All Social Media Accounts to ‘Public’

U.S. Embassy in the Philippines;

Effective March 30, in addition to Students and Exchanges (F, M, and J), and Specialty Occupations (H-1B and their H-4 dependents), the following visa applicants, regardless of age, must also now change their privacy settings and profiles to “public” on all social media platforms to complete the visa process.

  • Fiancé(e) Visa Applicants (K-1, K-2, and K-3 visas).
  • Certain Personal Employees or Domestic Workers (A-3, C-3, and G-5 visas)
  • Trainee or Special Education Exchange Visitors (H-3 and their H-4 dependents)
  • Cultural and Religious Visitors (Q, R-1, and R-2 visas)
  • Informant, Witness, and Victims of Crimes (S, T, and U visas)

The U.S. Embassy uses this information to determine applicants’ eligibility to receive a visa. Since 2019, the United States has required visa applicants to provide social media usernames on immigrant and nonimmigrant visa application forms.

Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames, handles, or identifiers for every platform they have used in the last 5 years on the visa application form. Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.

The six-seater Tesla Model Y L has landed in the Philippines

Angelo Nieto, Writing for Top Gear Philippines;

The Model Y L is 186mm longer and 44mm taller than the typical Model Y we’ve become familiar with. This lets the car carry a third row of seats, while upgrading the second row bench into captain chairs with ventilation and reclining functions. And there’s still plenty of space after all that reconfiguring: maximum cargo capacity now sits at 2,539 liters (compared to the Model Y’s 2,138 liters of space).

No official price has been announced by Tesla, but a ₱2.849 million price for the base model is not out of the possibility.

Aryna Sabalenka wins the 2026 Miami Open

In a high-stakes showdown in Miami, Aryna Sabalenka defeated home favorite Coco Gauff 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to claim her second consecutive Miami Open title. The victory marks a historic milestone for Sabalenka, as she becomes the first woman since Iga Swiatek in 2022 to complete the prestigious “Sunshine Double”—winning both Indian Wells and Miami in a single season.

This triumph marks Sabalenka’s 24th career WTA singles title, further cementing her dominance on hard courts. Despite Gauff’s spirited comeback in the second set, Sabalenka’s relentless power ultimately overwhelmed the young American in the decider.

Next for Sabalenka, Gauff and the rest of the tour will be clay season and games will shift to Europe mainly in Madrid and Rome and, of course, the French Open.

International Olympic Committee announces new Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic Sport

IOC;

The policy explains that, for all disciplines on the sports programme of an IOC event, including the Olympic Games and for both individual and team sports, eligibility for any female category is limited to biological females.

Eligibility for the female category is to be determined in the first instance by SRY gene screening to detect the absence or presence of the SRY gene.

Based on scientific evidence, the IOC considers that the presence of the SRY gene is fixed throughout life and represents highly accurate evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development. Furthermore, the IOC considers that SRY gene screening via saliva, cheek swab or blood sample is unintrusive compared to other possible methods.

In short, if you are not a “biological female” you will not be able to compete in any female events or sports. IOC noted that this new policy is not retroactive and applies only to elite IOC events.

Another thing to take note is that this “Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category” is set to take effect starting with the LA28 Olympic Games.

NBA owners vote to explore Vegas, Seattle expansion bids

Shams Charania, writing for ESPN;

The NBA’s board of governors has approved a vote for the league to explore bids and applicants for expansion teams exclusively in Las Vegas and Seattle.

All 30 owners voted in favor of exploring Las Vegas and Seattle expansion, sources told ESPN. A bidding process is expected to generate offers in the $7-10 billion range for each team, according to sources.

I’m all for expanding the NBA and bringing back the Seattle SuperSonics. As for Vegas, if approved, what would be the name of the Las Vegas Team? If the WNBA team is called the Aces, then can we call the NBA team as the Las Vegas Royals?
