Fighting through severe leg cramps, Washington’s Sonia Citron caught a clutch pass and converted a gritty layup to give the Mystics a 124-122 lead with just 21.4 seconds on the clock. Portland’s rookie sensation Carla Leite attacked the basket on the next possession, drawing a foul with 13.1 seconds left. Under immense pressure, Leite split her free throws, leaving the Fire trailing by one. After a frantic scramble, Leite got one final look—a driving runner at the buzzer—but it bounced off the back rim as time expired.
