ICYMI: Cape Verde Outlasted Saudi Arabia to advance to the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Cape Verde made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the knockout stage on their debut after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in Group H. The small island nation of just over 500,000 people became the smallest country ever to reach a World Cup round of 32, completing an unbeaten group stage run of three draws.

Goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout performer, making crucial saves — including stops in first-half stoppage time, the 66th minute, and the 92nd minute — to keep Saudi Arabia scoreless. Cape Verde came closest to winning late on, with Da Costa firing wide in front of an open net after Rodrigues cut it back. The Blue Sharks finished with an xG of 1.52, dwarfing Saudi Arabia’s 0.40.

Cape Verde will advance to a historic Round of 32 match against Argentina in Miami this July 3rd in Miami, while the Saudi Arabia finishes bottom and is officially eliminated from the World Cup.

Spain Back on Track with Emphatic 4–0 Victory Over Saudi Arabia

Spain bounced back from their opening-day draw with a commanding 4–0 demolition of Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium.

Determined to make a statement after being stifled by Cape Verde, La Roja unleashed an unstoppable first-half blitz. Teenage star Lamine Yamal opened the floodgates in the 10th minute, slotting home a low cross to score his first-ever World Cup goal.

Shortly after, Mikel Oyarzabal took center stage. The lethal forward struck twice in the span of three minutes (21′ and 24′) to put the game completely out of reach before the first hydration break.

Saudi Arabia’s defensive woes worsened early in the second half when Hassan Altambakti accidentally deflected the ball into his own net, compounding a difficult evening for the Green Falcons. Spain comfortably dictated the remaining tempo, securing three crucial Group H points and re-establishing their status as tournament heavyweights.

The Saudi Green Falcons are still mathematically alive in the tournament courtesy of their opening-match draw against Uruguay. A Saudi victory over Cape Verde would lift them to 4 points, which could guide them into the knockout phase depending on the result of the Spain–Uruguay match.

Saudi Arabia Splits Points with Uruguay in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H Opener

Saudi Arabia kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a gritty 1-1 draw against powerhouse Uruguay at Miami Stadium. The Saudi Green Falcons stunned the South Americans in the 41st minute when defender Abdulelah Al-Amri headed home from a corner. Despite safe keeping from Saudi goalie Mohammed Al-Owais, Uruguay’s relentless second-half pressure finally paid off in the 79th minute as Maximiliano Araújo swept home a rebound.

With Cape Verde and Spain also playing out a scoreless draw, Group H stands completely wide open, with all four teams locked on exactly one point. The single point is a massive confidence booster for Saudi Arabia, but their road only gets tougher. The tactical stalemate heightens the stakes for the next round of group stage fixtures. Saudi Arabia will face Spain, while Uruguay will battle Cape Verde in matches scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026.
