Breaking: Iranian Forces Launch Attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar

Iran today launched a missile attack targeting the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a major U.S. military installation. The attack, which Iran’s Tasnim news agency called “Annunciation of Victory,” comes as a direct retaliation for recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Loud explosions and flares were reported over Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Monday evening as the Qatari air defense systems, in coordination with the U.S., successfully intercepted the incoming short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. Qatari and U.S. officials swiftly confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries at the base, and minimal to no damage was reported to the facility itself.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officially claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was a “devastating and powerful” response to what it characterized as “America’s aggression.”

Reports indicate that Iran had warn Qatar regarding the impending attack, a move that analysts suggest points to a desire to demonstrate capability without causing widespread casualties, potentially aiming for de-escalation rather than all-out conflict. This pre-notification, along with the successful interceptions, allowed for precautionary measures to be taken, including temporary closures of Qatari airspace and advisories for U.S. citizens to shelter in place. In a report by NDTV, several other Gulf countries, including Kuwait, Iraq, UAE, and Bahrain, also temporarily closed their airspace as a precaution.

Al Udeid Air Base is the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, serving as the forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and a critical hub for U.S. operations across the region. It hosts approximately 10,000 U.S. service members, along with Qatari, British, and other allied forces. The base’s strategic importance underscores the gravity of Iran’s direct targeting of the facility.

Reactions to the attack have been swift. Saudi Arabia condemned the “unjustifiable” Iranian aggression, affirming its solidarity and full support for Qatar. Qatar’s Ministry of Defence “considered this a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar, its airspace, international law, and the United Nations Charter.”

DMW and NBI Shutdown Church Operating as Illegal Recruitment Front

Following President Marcos Jr.’s order to safeguard overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from illegal recruitment, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducted an entrapment operation on April 28, 2025, leading to the closure of a church in Baras, Rizal.

Migrant Workers Secretary Cacdac directed the shutdown of Faithful Promise Foundation Philippines Inc., also known as Faithful Promise of Jesus Christ the Greatest Master Phil. Inc. and Faithful Promise Church in the Philippines, located in Santo Niño Compound, Sitio Paenaan, Baras, Rizal. The church was found to be illegally recruiting individuals for jobs in Japan, Korea, and Papua New Guinea.

Undersecretary Olalia explained that the operation followed surveillance and the arrest of Pastora Esclarmonde Estrada Basalio, who was recruiting without DMW authorization. He stated that initial victims were fellow parishioners who reported the illegal activities, which were subsequently validated. Olalia noted instances of offloaded workers, ongoing illegal fee collection, and the recruitment of both departed and prospective OFWs. He emphasized that undocumented or improperly documented departures put lives at risk, underscoring the DMW’s concern for the well-being of OFWs and their families.

NBI Cavite North District Office Chief Nuqui revealed that the recruiter charged victims Php50,000 for processing and documents under the pretense of community work. He also reported receiving information about victims who arrived in other countries without the promised jobs.

Assistant Secretary Alcantara indicated that most victims were destined for construction and basic elementary occupations in Japan. The recruiter allegedly promised various jobs, including factory workers, tea pickers, clerks, accountants, mechanical engineers, and construction workers in Japan, Korea, and Papua New Guinea, with salaries ranging from Php36,000 to Php120,000.

Victims were reportedly issued tourist visas under the guise of missionary work and instructed to misrepresent their purpose to Immigration. Some were prevented from leaving, others were already deployed, and some were awaiting departure.

The closure operation was a joint effort by the DMW’s Migrant Workers Protection Bureau (MWPB) and the NBI. The DMW encourages individuals victimized by this religious group to report their cases to the MWPB via the hotline +63 2 8721-0619, email mwpb@dmw.gov.ph, or Facebook page (@dmwairtip.

Pope Francis Dies at 88 years old

Joshua McElwee reporting for Reuters, “He was 88, and had suffered a serious bout of double pneumonia this year, but his death came as a shock after he had been driven around St. Peter’s Square in an open-air popemobile to greet cheering crowds on Easter Sunday.”

To choose for his successor, CNN reports “Cardinals from around the world must gather for the conclave in which Francis’ successor is selected. It typically takes between two and three weeks for a pope to be chosen, though it can stretch slightly beyond that if cardinals struggle to agree on a candidate.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis is the successor of Pope Benedict XVI after he resigned on February 28 2013. Bergoglio was elected via papal conclave on 13 March. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis is “the first pope from the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit Order), the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first born or raised outside Europe since the 8th-century Syrian pope Gregory III.”

Pope Francis was the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, according to the official list maintained by the Vatican in the Annuario Pontificio (Pontifical Yearbook).

Google updates Google Maps to include West Philippine Sea

Google Maps has updated its maps to make the label “West Philippine Sea” (WPS) more visible for the waters west of the Philippines. This has been praised in the Philippines as it reinforces their claim over this part of the South China Sea.

Before, the WPS label might have been harder to see. Now, it’s clearer even when zoomed out. Filipino leaders and the military see this as important recognition of their rights, especially after the 2016 international court ruling that favored the Philippines over China’s broader claims in the area.

Under Administrative Order No. 29, the Philippines officially named this area the West Philippine Sea in 2012, covering 200 miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea. While China still calls it the South China Sea and disagrees with the international court’s decision, many Filipinos view Google’s update as a positive step in raising global awareness and acknowledging their sovereignty.

In a press release by the Philippines Government, Senate Majority Leader Francis ‘TOL’ Tolentino said “Growing global recognition for WPS represents a victory for all Filipinos. It is also an affirmation of the correctness of the Philippines’ current policy to assert its sovereign rights in line with international law and multilateralism.” Tolentino is the principal author of the landmark Philippine Maritime Zones Law (Republic Act 12064).

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vetoes declaring Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines”

President “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. just vetoed Senate Bill No. 2797, a bill that declares Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines.” The bill was authored by Sen. Lito Lapid and submitted last August 2024 and, was approved on third and final reading Monday, December 9, 2024.

In a letter that sent to the House of Representatives, Pres. Marcos Jr. cite that the bill “lacked a historical basis and key performance indicators to justify such declaration, warning that it could offend other provinces with similarly rich culinary traditions.” The President also said “I cannot ignore the concerns regarding the declaration’s lack of historical basis, the absence of a thorough study that shows key performance indicators for such designation, and the possibility that the bill may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions,”

He ended his letter stating that “All our culinary variations reflect the rich cultural diversity of a group of people scattered among the Philippine islands.”

You can read the full text of the letter below;

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Please allow me to extend my sincere appreciation to both Houses of Congress in their efforts to craft a bill which aims to declare the Province of Pampanga as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines in recognition of its contribution to the dynamic and rich culinary history of the country. It cannot be denied that Pampanga is celebrated for its diverse and flavorful dishes, traditional cooking methods, and a strong culture of food innovation. This is consistent with the policy of the government to conserve, promote, and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources, as well as artistic creations.

However, while I recognize the noble intention of the authors, I cannot ignore the concerns regarding the declaration’s lack of historical basis, the absence of a thorough study that shows key performance indicators for such designation, and the possibility that the bill may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions.

As such, pursuant to Section 27(1), Article VI of the 1987 Constitution, I am returning herewith without my signature the enrolled Senate Bill No. 2797/House Bill No. 10634, entitled:

“AN ACT DECLARING THE PROVINCE OF PAMPANGA AS THE ‘CULINARY CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES.”

The Philippine culinary arts draws its origin from various cultures but displays regional characteristics. Our regions contribute their indigenous dishes with certain recipes that are best done in the areas of origin of their ingredients. All our culinary variations reflect the rich cultural diversity of a group of people scattered among the Philippine islands. Although the Filipino is derived from a common racial stock and a shared history that gave us our identity, our terrains and ethnic characteristics gave us certain differences.

I believe that one must travel our islands to identify the tastes and flavors that express our culture. Our regional variants and their recognizable nuances are what make the palette that is truly Filipino. All of our reputable culinary resources in the form of food literature and gastronomic professionals profess and celebrate the multitude and variety of our native recipes that are sourced from the different provinces and regions. Comparable to literature, visual arts, dance, or music, our culinary arts thrives in its diversity. This richness in terms of regional differences is the strength of our Filipino cuisine.

In consideration of the possibility that the enrolled bill may cause negative cultural implications, discrimination, regional bias, and loss of diversity, I am constrained to veto the abovementioned Enrolled Bill. Either way, I extend my unwavering support to the leadership of both Houses of Congress for working in unison with the Executive and I look forward to more beneficial legislation that would highlight our unique culture without sacrificing our diversity.

Watch Former-President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte first appearance at the ICC

On 10 February 2025, the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC applied for an arrest warrant against Mr Duterte for the crimes against humanity of murder, torture and rape. The Chamber assessed the material submitted by the Prosecution and found reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Duterte is individually responsible as an indirect co-perpetrator for the crime against humanity of murder, allegedly committed in the Philippines between 1 November 2011 and 16 March 2019.

The warrant of arrest against Mr Duterte was issued by the Chamber as “Secret” on 7 March 2025 and reclassified as “Public” on 11 March 2025. On 12 March 2025, Mr Duterte was surrendered to the International Criminal Court after being arrested by the authorities of the Republic of the Philippines in accordance with the warrant of arrest. He is currently in ICC custody.

The Philippines, an ICC State Party since 1 November 2011, deposited a written notification of withdrawal from the Statute on 17 March 2018. Under article 127 of the Statute, that withdrawal took effect on 17 March 2019. Nevertheless, the ICC retains jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed in the Philippines while the country was a State Party to the Statute.

For the sake of transparency, ICC made all documents available online including the Warrant of Arrest, so we can be informed on all the things that the ICC is doing.

The Pre-Trial concluded by stating that the confirmation of charges hearing to begin on 23 September 2025.

Philippine Airlines investing ₱10 million to support aspiring Women Pilots

Philippine Airlines (PAL) just announced that they will be investing ₱10 million to “support aspiring women pilots” thru their “Fly With Her” Program (the “Program”) in partnership with PAL Foundation. With the “Fly With Her” Program, PAL aims to close the gender gap in the aviation industry, specially within their ranks since there are currently over 80 women pilots fly for PAL, which is just 9% of our pilot roster.

Here’s the full text of PAL’s official statement;

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Airlines (PAL) seeks to address the gender gap in aviation through its Fly With Her program, which helps women pursue their dream of flying for the nation’s flag carrier. It recently pledged P10 million to the PAL Foundation, which oversees the scholarship program for women pilots.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reiterate our support to women who dream of flying for and even assuming top positions in the PAL organization,” said Alvin M. Miranda, PAL Vice President for Marketing.

Apart from the P10 million pledge, PAL will release a film inspired by a real-life story of a young girl who dreamed of becoming a pilot.

“When little girls see women take on leadership roles, it inspires them to do the same and possibly go beyond,” said Lilybeth T. Ng, PAL Assistant Vice President for Pilot Affairs.

The gender gap in aviation remains significant, with only around 6% of pilots worldwide being women.

An Ally of Women in Aviation

PAL has long been a staunch supporter of women in the airline industry. In 1989, its very own Captain Aimee Carandang-Gloria became Southeast Asia’s first woman commercial airline pilot to fly a commercial flight. She broke barriers again in 1993, by becoming the region’s first woman airline captain. PAL continues to lead the way in opening doors for women in the male-dominated industry.

PAL continues to work for clearer and more inclusive skies in aviation, on the strength of its signature service of #CareThatComesFromTheHeart.
