Opinion: Friendly reminder about your Facebook and other/all Social Media Account

There’s an “old” adage “if it’s free, you’re the product.” While social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok offer a great way to global connection at “no monetary cost”, the “free” price tag is an illusion that most social media users do not understand. In reality, the user (you) are the product, your attention/time and data which are harvested by the social media network for their “main/actual” customer are the advertisers.

Posting “legal notice”, in the hopes of making it viral circulates on social media feeds, with users/influencers posting statements like: “I HEREBY DECLARE THAT I DO NOT GIVE MY PERMISSION FOR META TO USE MY DATA.” While these posts provide a “false” sense of agency, they are legally meaningless. A status update cannot unilaterally rewrite a signed contract. Because you agreed to facebook’s Terms, Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy. the moment you create your account, you already gave the platform your consent. These platforms operate on a “take it or leave it” basis; the only way to stop or legally “revoke” permission is to delete your account.

Here’s what Facebook says when you delete your account;

Deleting your account is permanent. When you delete your account, your main profile and everything else you’ve added will be permanently deleted. You won’t be able to retrieve anything you’ve added. All additional profiles, Messenger and all of your messages will also be deleted.

But even if you delete your account, there is no guarantee that all your data will be deleted from the system.

We have to remember that Facebook and other social media platforms pay engineers and designers tons of money, to keep you “the product” engaged for as long as possible and as often as possible. Which is why we have this thing called “Attention Economy”, where algorithms are built to trigger dopamine responses, leading to habits like “doomscrolling.” For the modern digital Filipino, it’s important to know that social media isn’t a free public service. It is a private marketplace where your time, privacy, and data are the real money being spent.

US Visa Applicants in the Philippines are required to set All Social Media Accounts to ‘Public’

U.S. Embassy in the Philippines;

Effective March 30, in addition to Students and Exchanges (F, M, and J), and Specialty Occupations (H-1B and their H-4 dependents), the following visa applicants, regardless of age, must also now change their privacy settings and profiles to “public” on all social media platforms to complete the visa process.

  • Fiancé(e) Visa Applicants (K-1, K-2, and K-3 visas).
  • Certain Personal Employees or Domestic Workers (A-3, C-3, and G-5 visas)
  • Trainee or Special Education Exchange Visitors (H-3 and their H-4 dependents)
  • Cultural and Religious Visitors (Q, R-1, and R-2 visas)
  • Informant, Witness, and Victims of Crimes (S, T, and U visas)

The U.S. Embassy uses this information to determine applicants’ eligibility to receive a visa. Since 2019, the United States has required visa applicants to provide social media usernames on immigrant and nonimmigrant visa application forms.

Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames, handles, or identifiers for every platform they have used in the last 5 years on the visa application form. Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.

Marcos Signs Republic Act No. 12316, Authorizing the President to Suspend or Reduce Excise taxes on Petroleum Products

Betheena Unite, writing for Manila Bulletin;

President Marcos has signed the law giving him emergency powers to suspend or reduce excise tax on petroleum products.

Marcos signed Republic Act (RA) No. 12316 on Wednesday, March 25, fulfilling what he said earlier in the day that he would be signing the measure into law within the day.

Under the law, the President may suspend the imposition of or reduce the excise taxes on fuel when the average Dubai crude oil price based on Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) reaches or exceeds $80 per barrel for one month immediately preceding the issuance of the suspension or reduction order.

You can read the Full text of Republic Act No. 12316 here.

Rappler write a great explainer on “How will suspending fuel excise taxes cushion a big oil price hike?” which is worth reading.

Suspending/reducing excise taxes cushions price hikes by providing immediate relief at the pump. By removing fixed taxes—specifically ₱10/liter for gasoline and ₱6/liter for diesel—the retail price drops instantly. This also triggers a “tax-on-tax” reduction, as the 12% VAT is no longer applied to the excised portion.

Beyond the pump, it helps curb inflation. By lowering transport and logistics costs, it prevents a domino effect on food prices and public transport fares. While this saves consumers money, it results in massive revenue losses (est. ₱136B), potentially forcing the government to reduce infrastructure spending or increase debt.

These subsidies will be distributed to operators through fuel subsidy cards, manager’s checks, bank transfers, or e-wallet transfers.

On the other hand, drivers will receive their subsidies through cash or e-wallet transfers.

While fuel subsidy distribution for tricycle drivers in the National Capital Region (NCR) began last week, a total of 723,000 tricycle operators and drivers will get their PHP5,000 subsidy after the Holy Week.

A total of 157,972 registered delivery drivers will also receive fuel subsidies after the Holy Week.

Opinion: Fil-Ams told to “Think twice before renouncing citizenship”

For many Filipino-Americans raised entirely in the United States, the decision regarding Philippine citizenship is often a “no-brainer,” favoring practicality and stability over heritage.

This perspective stems from two core factors: a cultural disconnect and practical risk assessment.

First, while they claim Filipino heritage, having spent their whole lives in the U.S., they often know “little to nothing about the Philippines, its people and culture” beyond familial connections. Their primary cultural allegiance and lived reality are American.

Second, the decision is rooted in livelihood. With family, career, and financial stability firmly established in the United States, the rationale is clear: why risk losing a job and uprooting a whole family simply to maintain a citizenship used only for brief, infrequent visits?

The marginal benefit of retaining Philippine citizenship (convenience during a trip every few years) does not outweigh the substantial risk to one’s American life. It is a rational, utilitarian choice to prioritize the stability and security of their life in the U.S. over a largely symbolic connection to their ancestral land.

Trump with New Order that Imposes $100,000 Annual Fee on H-1B Visas

Trump administration is planning to impose a $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas. In the official statement of the White House, the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program, intended to bring in high-skilled temporary workers, has been widely misused by companies, particularly in the IT sector, to replace American employees with lower-paid foreign labor. This abuse has artificially suppressed wages and negatively impacted the U.S. labor market, especially for recent college graduates in STEM fields who face high unemployment rates.

According to the provided text, the number of foreign STEM workers more than doubled from 2000 to 2019, largely due to this misuse. H-1B-reliant IT outsourcing firms save a significant amount by hiring foreign workers at a substantial discount, with some companies laying off thousands of American workers while simultaneously hiring thousands of H-1B visa holders. This practice not only harms American workers but also poses a national security threat.

To address these issues, a presidential order was issued on September 19, 2025. It imposes a 12-month restriction on H-1B visas for workers outside the U.S., requiring employers to pay a $100,000 fee for each visa. Exceptions can be made if the Secretary of Homeland Security determines that the hiring is in the national interest. The order also mandates that the Department of Labor revise prevailing wage levels to align with the new policy goals.

In a stunning turn of events at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah, Gilas Pilipinas suffered a disappointing 95-87 loss to Chinese Taipei in their opening game. The Philippine national team was on the back foot from the start, trailing by as much as 17 points in the first quarter and struggling to contain a hot-shooting Chinese Taipei squad.

Despite a valiant comeback effort, Gilas couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Justin Brownlee led the charge with 19 points before fouling out in the final minutes, a major blow to the team’s rally. Kevin Quiambao provided a spark off the bench with 17 points, while Scottie Thompson and Dwight Ramos added 12 points apiece, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. DMW to Shipowners: Reroute or Face Sanctions Amid Red Sea Dangers

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is urging shipowners and manning agencies to reroute vessels away from the high-risk Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to ensure the safety of Filipino seafarers. This directive comes from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and is a response to recent attacks in the region.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac stressed that simply taking safety precautions isn’t enough; avoiding these areas altogether is the best way to protect seafarers. He also mandated that shipowners and manning agencies report any scheduled passages through these high-risk zones and provide information on Filipino seafarers on board to the DMW’s welfare monitoring system. Failure to report will result in sanctions.

The DMW is actively monitoring the situation, coordinating with other agencies, and providing direct assistance and updates to the families of affected seafarers, emphasizing a “people-first approach” as directed by President Marcos.

You can read the full text of DMW statement below.

𝗗𝗠𝗪 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 ‘𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸, 𝘄𝗮𝗿-𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲’ 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀
In line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure the safety and security of Filipino seafarers, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reiterates its call for shipowners and licensed manning agencies (LMAs) to reroute their vessels away from high-risk areas, particularly traversing the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

In response to recent attacks in the Red Sea, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac reiterated key provisions of the Department Order No. 1, Series of 2024, ensuring protection of Filipino seafarers amid the increasing incidence of hijacking or armed violence against ships passing through the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding areas.

“We asked shipowners carrying Filipino seafarers to please divert your voyagers. It is not enough to just say, we are taking the necessary safety precautions, the best way to spare our seafarers is to avoid the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” Secretary Cacdac emphasized.

In addition, he urged shipowners and manning agencies to report the scheduled passage of ships and those Philippine seafarers on board in our welfare monitoring system including information on deployment or knowledge of any scheduled passage to the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden, emphasizing that “Failure to report such a significant event will result in the imposition of sanctions under the DMW rules and regulations upon the manning agent and the principal.”

“The Department will not hesitate to take firm and lawful action against those who compromise the safety of our seafarers. We owe them protection, not promises,” Cacdac stressed.

The DMW is closely monitoring developments in the region and working in tandem with concerned agencies to coordinate support for seafarers and their families. The DMW already reached out to affected families via phone calls and zoom meeting to ensure that necessary assistance and updates are delivered directly.

“President Marcos has directed us to take a people-first approach—to make sure every Filipino seafarer is accounted for and that their families are given the attention and care they deserve,” Secretary Cacdac ended. ###

Anti-Political Dynasty Act filed at the House of Representatives

ACT Teachers Party List Representative Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Party List Representative Renee Co filed on Monday House Bill 209 or the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act.

ABS-CBN:

The measure defines “political dynasty” as a “family or clan that concentrates, consolidates, or perpetuates their political power by holding public office simultaneously or successively.”

Under the bill, “no person shall hold or run for any elective national or local office simultaneously with another within the fourth degree of consanguinity or affinity, whether legitimate or illegitimate, full or half blood.”

It also prohibits those within this degree of relationship to an incumbent elected official from immediately succeeding to the position.

If I’m not mistaken, similar bills have been filed before, and since the majority of political personalities are from ‘political dynasties/families,’ I doubt that this new bill will be more successful than the previously filed bills.
