In a major opening-round shocker at the 2026 Wuhan Open, home favorite and wildcard entrant Han Shi pulled off a sensational comeback victory to defeat 13th seed Alex Eala, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, on the Dongfeng Voyah Center Court.

The defeat cuts short Eala’s campaign at the final WTA 1000 event of the season, while Shi delivers one of the biggest wins of her young career in front of a delighted home crowd.

Match Recap

1st Set

Eala came out aggressive from the start, taking the ball early on the rise to establish command during baseline rallies. Leveraging her tactical depth, the 19th-ranked Filipina broke early and closed out the opening set 6–4.

2nd Set

Eala appeared to be cruising in the second set, holding a 3–2 lead. However, double faults and unforced errors began to creep into Eala’s service games. Free-swinging with “nothing to lose,” Han Shi raised her level, capitalizing on Eala’s vulnerable second serves and firing four aces to break twice and claim the set 6–3.

3rd Set

With momentum entirely on her side, Shi dictated the longer rallies in the decider. Winning 74% of her first-serve points throughout the match, the 217th-ranked wildcard maintained pressure from behind the baseline. Shi pulled ahead midway through the set, denying Eala any rhythm and closing out the victory 6–3 after nearly three hours of play.

Match Highlights;

While Shi moves on to the Round of 32 in Wuhan, Eala will turn her attention to the doubles main draw alongside her partner Zeynep Sönmez as she looks to rebound from the singles exit.
