Eala dictated play early, breaking Fernandez twice and cruising through the opening set 6-2 with sharp baseline depth. However, the second set quickly turned into a battle of nerves as Fernandez elevated her intensity. The Canadian seventh seed raced out to a commanding 5-1 lead, appearing poised to force a deciding set.
Refusing to break, the 21-year-old Filipino star launched an astounding comeback. Eala reeled off five consecutive games to snatch a 6-5 lead. Although Fernandez managed a crucial hold to force a tiebreak, Eala dominated the tiebreaker 7-1 to lock up the win in one hour and 53 minutes.
