Netflix just announced that the anime film – The First Slam Dunk, will be available for streaming in 75 countries from August 25. The film have been streaming exclusively in Japan since June 10th. The addition of “The First Slam Dunk” movie is an ongoing effort by the streaming giant to expand its anime library.
The First Slam Dunk is an Japanese animated sports film written and directed by Takehiko Inoue, produced by Toei Animation and DandeLion Animation Studio. It is based on the legendary manga by Takehiko Inoue about a high school basketball team, serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from October 1990 to June 1996.
The First Slam Dunk is the “origin story” of Ryota Miyagi, the point guard of Shohoku High School’s basketball team, and on how his older brother Sota, inspired his love for basketball. In 2023, the film won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year and grossed $279 million worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing anime film of all time.
