Balay Dako, a supposedly pet-friendly restaurant turns away customer with Aspin

Balay Dako, a purported “pet-friendly” restaurant, is in hot waters after what appears to be a discrimination on the staff’s part for turning away customers with Aspin, a local breed of dogs in the Philippines. a.k.a. Askal.

Ms. Lara L. Antonio posted a 1000 words post on her Facebook account regarding her encounter with the Balay Dako staff and how she and her companion where turned away because of her dog ‘Yoda’ is not a “shit tzus, labradors…” or a “golden retriever”.

Here’s a snippet of her.. now viral post;

We’ve eaten at Balay Dako before – we know it’s pet-friendly. Yoda has, in fact, been here before as well so we went there assuming everything’s okay. We get to the front of house and she hands me a paper with pet guidelines. It basically says small-medium sized dogs only and big dogs are not alllowed. It also says that dogs must be in a diaper, can’t be smelly, etc. and they will be turned away. I see “diaper” and I instantly think oh no we didn’t bring a diaper. So Mon asks the front of house, and she says it’s okay. There are diapers we can buy inside. She sees Yoda and Ari and nothing is amiss (for now).

Yoda, Ari and I are standing in front of the FOH, waiting to be seated and waiting for Mon to come out with the diapers when someone in black – staff – sees Yoda, goes inside, goes back out and then whispers something to the front of house.

Suddenly, FOH tells me that Yoda isn’t allowed inside. I ask “why”, she says “up to medium sized dogs only”. And I said huh? At this point, we’ve been standing in front of they door for over 10 minutes na, people going in and out greeting Yoda and Ari and she didn’t say anything to me. Tapos biglang she says ah bawal na yung isang dog. So I say, “she’s medium sized. We’ve been here before and no issues naman” and then !!! She said “ano pong breed niya?”

According to her Facebook profile, Ms. Lara L. Antonio is the Marketing Manager of Riot Games in the Philippines, Co-founder of Scene PH and a full-time fur-mom. It looks like those at Balay Dako, messed with the wrong fur-mom.

As of posting, Ms. Antonio’s post has more than 127K reactions and has been shared more than 61K times.

Ad agency and Wellspring issue Public Apology for the “Gil Tulog” Marketing Stunt

The ad agency and company behind the controversial “Gil Tulog” marketing stunt has issue an apology, this is after Puyat Clan files complaint against the ad agency for doing ‘Gil Tulog’ campaign.

Gigil, the ad agency behind the “Gil Tulog” campaign, said “Even as all the necessary permits and clearances were secured, our approach had resonated differently and so the campaign was immediately discontinued.” The agency ended their statement with “Our agency will be putting in place more stringent measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

Wellspring, who commissioned the marketing agency, also issued an apology saying;

We made a misstep in our campaign and we are sorry.
We recognize and deeply regret the insensitivity of our execution and we offer our sincerest apologies to the Puyat family, the Makati City government, and the public.
We have learned from this mistake and are committed to doing better.

Gigil is not new to viral videos and trending topics, since they are the company behind some of the most viral ad like the RC cola’s commercials and this Grab Ph Ad. And if you believe that there is not bad publicity, then Wellspring got their money’s worth for doing the marketing stunt no matter how short it is, they will forever be connected to Gil Tulog a.k.a. Gil Puyat Ave.

Why did Makati Gil Puyat Avenue change to Gil Tulog Avenue?

This have been trending since yesterday, the issue is that Makati’s Gil Puyat Ave. was suddenly change to Gil Tulog Ave. Thanks to the recently typhoon, people did not notice about the new “name’ until recently.

So what this an official change of name by the Municipality of Makati or it’s just a prank made by someone for clout and clicks?

After a quick google and a visit to the Philippines subreddit, it turns out this is a marketing stunt by “Gil Tulog” is a marketing stunt by Wellspring, a health and wellness brand known for its melatonin supplements.

It’s not just with the street name of Gil Puyat, the campaign also includes Wellspring-branded jeepneys, that they are calling “Sleepneys.” The “sleepneys” will give free rides if your route is “Terminal: Guadalupe Complex > Buendia, EDSA (SB) > Paseo de Roxas > Nicanor Garcia > Tordesillas, Makati City > Ayala Avenue > Senator Gil Puyat Avenue > Washington Intersection, Makati City.”

It’s unclear on how much Wellspring paid for the publicity stunt and if they received the approval of Makati city but one thing is sure, this is “genius but stupid” at the same time.

The reactions to Potato Corner job ads are gold!

Potato Corner may have been fast in deleting the job post and publishing a reply, this is the most appropriate way to handle this situation but as we all know the internet is much faster in reacting to the post and these are just a few of them.

In no particular order! 🙂

Potato Corner under fire for insensitive Job Postings

Popular Filipino snack brand Potato Corner recently came under fire after a job posting for a service crew member went viral on social media. The post, which was shared on the company’s official Facebook page (now deleted), included a number of “inappropriate” qualifications, such as “good visual impact and pleasing personality,” “weight must be proportionate to height,” and “have clear complexion, eyesight and good set of teeth.”

The post quickly drew widespread criticism from netizens, who accused Potato Corner of discrimination and body shaming. In response, the company deleted the post and issued an apology.

“We deeply regret the oversight in the job posting,” Potato Corner said in a statement. “We, together with our business partners, are working to ensure that such incidents will not happen in the future.”

Potato Corner also said that it is “committed to fostering an inclusive environment” and that it “does not support or condone discriminatory hiring practices.”

In the wake of the Potato Corner incident, other companies have also been taking steps to review their own job postings and even created a job posts that’s a total opposite to Potato Corner’s postings. A good example is this job postings from Lola Nena’s;

The Potato Corner incident is a reminder that companies need to be more careful about the language they use in job postings, even though they mean well and it may even appear funny but in reality appear discriminatory and indifferent to other people.

Here’s that RC Cola’s commercial that trended

There’s nothing much to say about the commercial, except that the creative team behind the ad succeeded in making a viral video. This could be a first of many weirdly creative commercial from the brand, similar to the other viral commercial videos from Japan, China and even in Thailand.

Here’s that video;
