Justin Brownlee cleared to join Gilas Pilipinas Men for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) just announced the FIBA has cleared Justin Brownlee to play for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers. The basketball governing body also issued Brownlee a Notice of Charge carrying a proposed three (3) month Period of Ineligibility in relation to the anti-doping rule violation that occurred during the 19th Asian Games, which according to SBP retroactive.

Justin Brownlee will be the lone naturalized player for Gilas and will be joining 11 other cager for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers and the upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament this July 2024.

Gilas, for their first two games for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, will face Hong Kong on February 22 at the Tsuen Wan Stadium and Chinese Taipei on February 25 at the PhilSports Arena and tickets for the home game are already available via smtickets.com.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announces Tim Cone as Head Coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) just announced that Tim Cone will be the as Head Coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men. Together with Tim Cone’s announcement, SBP also announced the 12 players roster for the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, set this February 2024. The 12 players are composed of current PBA and UAAP players, as well as those playing in the Japanese B-League as imports.

Coach Tim Cone is one of the winningest coach in the PBA, a 25 times champion with 38 Finals appearances. He is currently the head coach of the most popular team in the PBA, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, a gig that he got in 2015.

“Coach Tim accomplished what has not been done in decades with only a few weeks to prepare and multiple challenges in terms of personnel so we’re excited to see what he can accomplish with a long-term program in place especially if such program is supported by all basketball stakeholders.” said SBP President Al Panlilio.

“Earlier this month, coach Tim presented his plans to local leagues from which players will likely be selected from. This program will be put to test this year and adjustments will be made as necessary,” added SBP Executive Director Erika Dy.

The Philippines is also included in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament from July 2 to 7 in Latvia.

Gilas Pilipinas to join Georgia and Latvia for the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) just release the final Draw results for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024, it shows that Philippines will be in Group A for the Riga (Latvia) leg. Philippines will join Georgia and Latvia in the group.

Aside from Latvia, Piraeus (Greece), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Valencia (Spain) are the other host countries for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024. There will be a total of 24 teams vying for the four available slots for the 2024 Olympic Games, one for each tournaments.

Seven countries have already qualified directly for the 2024 Olympic Games at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023; for Europe, we have Germany and Serbia, then for the Americas, we have Canada and United States, Australia for Oceania, Japan for Asia and South Sudan for Africa. France also qualified since they’re the hosts for this coming Olympic.

It’s still unclear who will play for Gilas and it good that we’ll more than enough time to prepare for the tournament. Games for the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will be played from July 2 to 7.

SBP and PBA release statement on the championship won by the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s Basketball Team at the 19th Asian Games

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) just released a joint statement regarding the gold medal that the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s Basketball Team won at the 19th Asian Games.

The statement is also a recognizes the work that Gilas Team Manager Alfrancis Chua and Gilas Deputy Team Manager Willie Marcial did to support the team while in tournament in Hangzhou, China. It also cite the “all-out support” of SBP Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan and SMC President and CEO Ramon S. Ang, to the team, which resulted in bagging the GOLD medal for the nation and Filipino basketball fans after more than six (6) decades.

The statement appears to been release due to the controversies that Gilas Pilipinas Men’s Basketball Team have been experience after winning the Gold medal earlier this month. First, it was disclosed that a player as ‘Asking for the moon’ in order to join Gilas and then Justin Brownlee, testing positive for a substance linked to cannabis use.

This is Gilas Pilipinas’ final lineup for the Group A FIBA World Cup 2023

We are just days before the opening games of the Group A of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in the Philippine Arena, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has finalized their 12-man roster of Gilas Pilipinas for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The 12-man roster of Gilas Pilipinas is composed of five FIBA World Cup returnees and seven first-timers. NBA veteran Jordan Clarkson will lead the squad. World Cup returnees June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Kiefer Ravena, CJ Perez, and Roger Pogoy, they represented the country in the previous FIBA World Cup in China four years ago.

World Cup first-timers Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, Scottie Thompson, AJ Edu, Jamie Malonzo, and Rhenz Abando will complete the squad. The staff is compose of Head Coach Chot Reyes with assistant coaches Tim Cone, Jong Uichico, Josh Reyes.

Four players were cut from the team after a rigorous two-month training: Chris Newsome, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Thirdy Ravena and Calvin Oftana.

Gilas Pilipinas will face Dominican Republic, Angola and Italy on Aug. 25, 27 and 29 respectively. The top three teams in each group advanced to the second round. You can find the team groupings here.

Kai Sotto Cleared to Play for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA World Cup 2023

Kai Sotto, the 7-foot-3 center who is considered to be one of the Philippines’ best basketball prospects, has been cleared to play for Gilas Pilipinas in the upcoming FIBA World Cup 2023 in Manila.

Sotto had been sidelined with a back injury that he suffered during his stint in the NBA Summer League. He was initially ruled out of the World Cup, but he has since made a full recovery and has been practicing with Gilas Pilipinas to get back in playing shape.

“Our doctors spoke to his doctors and he’s been cleared to play. So that’s good news,” Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio said during the special PSA Forum on Tuesday at the Meralco headquarters in Ortigas.

Sotto’s addition to the Gilas Pilipinas roster is a major boost for the team. He is a physical presence in the paint and he has a good shooting touch. He is also a good passer and rebounder.

Gilas Pilipinas is in Group A of the FIBA World Cup, along with Dominican Republic, Italy, and Angola. The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will take place from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Sotto’s participation in the World Cup is a major step in his basketball career. He is hoping to help Gilas Pilipinas make a deep run in the tournament and he is also hoping to attract the attention of NBA scouts.

Sotto’s clearance to play is a major boost for Gilas Pilipinas’ chances of success in the World Cup. He is a talented player who has the potential to make a big impact on the team. With Sotto in the lineup, Gilas Pilipinas will be a more dangerous team.

SBP submits Gilas pool for the 5×5 and 3×3 SEA Games to POC

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) just submitted the lists of players for 5×5 basketball as well as the 3×3 basketball for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

The 5×5 Team

The 28-man pool for the Men’s basketball is lead by six-time PBA Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo and naturalized Filipino Justin Brownlee, the team will be looking to regain its basketball dominance in the region after they lost to the Indonesians, the eventual gold medalist of the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi last year. The head coach will still be Chot Reyes, together with Fajardo and Pogoy, are part of the basketball contingent of last year’s 31st Southeast Asian Games.

As for the women’s 3×3 squad, which will be lead by coach Pat Aquino are; Jack Danielle Animam, Afril Bernardino, Ana Alicia Katrina Castillo, Quinn Kacey Dela Rosa, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, Kristine Cayabyab, and Mai Loni Leshae’ Henson. The 3×3 women’s team took home the gold medal in the 2019 SEA games held in Manila.

Philippines will not send a basketball team to the 18th Asian Games

Here’s the official statement from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP);

SBP did not state any reason other than “to allow our National team and our organization to regroup, prepare for the process of appealing the FIBA Disciplinary Panel..”

In this ESPN 5 article, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said that the Rain or Shine (RoS) management remains willing to send its team to the Asian Games.

If PBA players are not available, why not just send selection of college players which is what the Philippines have been doing before they started sending pros in 1990.
