Roblox Partners with DICT and CICC to Launch New Child Safety Features in the Philippines

Following a high-level meeting with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), Roblox has announced a major safety initiative tailored for Filipino users.

The platform is introducing two new account types—Roblox Kids and Roblox Select—designed to bolster online protection for children through age-appropriate content and verified security measures.

Key safety measures include:

  • Automatic Placement: Users are sorted into accounts based on verified age.
  • Restricted Communication: Chat is disabled for those under 9, while older children have access to filtered chat limited to peers and “Trusted Friends.”
  • Enhanced Parental Controls: Filipino parents can now block specific games and manage chat settings.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda and CICC Usec. Aboy Paraiso highlighted a new “green lane” agreement, allowing parents to report grievances or harmful content directly via Hotline 1326. While the government commends Roblox’s commitment to “Digital Bayanihan,” officials emphasized that online safety remains a shared responsibility. They urged parents to remain vigilant in monitoring their children’s digital activities to ensure a secure and positive environment for their development.

Yugatech: VinFast Philippines offers EV rentals from ₱1,000/day for TNVS drivers in PH

Anton Gabriel, writing for Yugatech;

VinFast Philippines is rolling out a new program that allows ride-hailing drivers to rent electric vehicles (EVs) for as low as ₱1,000 per day, aiming to make EV adoption more accessible for the transport sector.

The initiative targets Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers and operators, offering flexible rental and ownership options for models under its Green lineup, including the Herio Green and Limo Green.

This is terms of the offer.

Under the rental program, drivers are required to pay an upfront deposit and choose a contract duration. Longer-term plans are available, with daily rental rates starting at around ₱1,000, depending on the agreement.

This is a great program, especially for TNVS drivers and operators looking to switch from ICE to EV. It serves as an excellent starting point. A number of TNVS drivers/operators I’ve spoken with earn an average of 3k to 5k a day. They often mention that being a TNVS driver gives them a lot of freedom — essentially a much better work-life balance, unlike their previous experiences in the corporate world or as an OFW.

US Visa Applicants in the Philippines are required to set All Social Media Accounts to ‘Public’

U.S. Embassy in the Philippines;

Effective March 30, in addition to Students and Exchanges (F, M, and J), and Specialty Occupations (H-1B and their H-4 dependents), the following visa applicants, regardless of age, must also now change their privacy settings and profiles to “public” on all social media platforms to complete the visa process.

  • Fiancé(e) Visa Applicants (K-1, K-2, and K-3 visas).
  • Certain Personal Employees or Domestic Workers (A-3, C-3, and G-5 visas)
  • Trainee or Special Education Exchange Visitors (H-3 and their H-4 dependents)
  • Cultural and Religious Visitors (Q, R-1, and R-2 visas)
  • Informant, Witness, and Victims of Crimes (S, T, and U visas)

The U.S. Embassy uses this information to determine applicants’ eligibility to receive a visa. Since 2019, the United States has required visa applicants to provide social media usernames on immigrant and nonimmigrant visa application forms.

Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames, handles, or identifiers for every platform they have used in the last 5 years on the visa application form. Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.

The six-seater Tesla Model Y L has landed in the Philippines

Angelo Nieto, Writing for Top Gear Philippines;

The Model Y L is 186mm longer and 44mm taller than the typical Model Y we’ve become familiar with. This lets the car carry a third row of seats, while upgrading the second row bench into captain chairs with ventilation and reclining functions. And there’s still plenty of space after all that reconfiguring: maximum cargo capacity now sits at 2,539 liters (compared to the Model Y’s 2,138 liters of space).

No official price has been announced by Tesla, but a ₱2.849 million price for the base model is not out of the possibility.

Opinion: Fil-Ams told to “Think twice before renouncing citizenship”

For many Filipino-Americans raised entirely in the United States, the decision regarding Philippine citizenship is often a “no-brainer,” favoring practicality and stability over heritage.

This perspective stems from two core factors: a cultural disconnect and practical risk assessment.

First, while they claim Filipino heritage, having spent their whole lives in the U.S., they often know “little to nothing about the Philippines, its people and culture” beyond familial connections. Their primary cultural allegiance and lived reality are American.

Second, the decision is rooted in livelihood. With family, career, and financial stability firmly established in the United States, the rationale is clear: why risk losing a job and uprooting a whole family simply to maintain a citizenship used only for brief, infrequent visits?

The marginal benefit of retaining Philippine citizenship (convenience during a trip every few years) does not outweigh the substantial risk to one’s American life. It is a rational, utilitarian choice to prioritize the stability and security of their life in the U.S. over a largely symbolic connection to their ancestral land.

PH Government and Private Sector Unite for a Safer Internet

To create a safer online environment for Filipinos, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) are intensifying their campaign against the sale of illegal products on online platforms and social media.

This initiative, led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure cyberspace safety, is a top priority for the DICT. According to DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, this effort requires a “digital bayanihan” or community cooperation. The DICT has been in contact with social media platforms and other government agencies to address the circulation of harmful content online.

CICC Acting Executive Director Atty. Renato Paraiso stated that the CICC enforces a zero-tolerance policy against online harm. He mentioned that social media and online selling platforms have agreed to comply with this directive and have their own mechanisms to sweep for and remove harmful content, including child pornography and deep fakes.

In addition to government action, the public is encouraged to be vigilant and report suspicious online activities and illegal product sales to the hotline 1326.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also plays a role in this effort. DTI Assistant Secretary Valdez III highlighted the launch of the eCommerce Philippine Trustmark, which acts as a regulatory authority to ensure safety, prevent the sale of substandard products, and mitigate online fraud and scams.

Representatives from Shopee PH, TikTok PH, and Google Philippines attended the press conference, expressing their support for the government’s initiatives. The collaboration between the public and private sectors is seen as key to creating a secure digital environment for all Filipinos.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vetoes declaring Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines”

President “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. just vetoed Senate Bill No. 2797, a bill that declares Pampanga as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines.” The bill was authored by Sen. Lito Lapid and submitted last August 2024 and, was approved on third and final reading Monday, December 9, 2024.

In a letter that sent to the House of Representatives, Pres. Marcos Jr. cite that the bill “lacked a historical basis and key performance indicators to justify such declaration, warning that it could offend other provinces with similarly rich culinary traditions.” The President also said “I cannot ignore the concerns regarding the declaration’s lack of historical basis, the absence of a thorough study that shows key performance indicators for such designation, and the possibility that the bill may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions,”

He ended his letter stating that “All our culinary variations reflect the rich cultural diversity of a group of people scattered among the Philippine islands.”

You can read the full text of the letter below;

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Please allow me to extend my sincere appreciation to both Houses of Congress in their efforts to craft a bill which aims to declare the Province of Pampanga as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines in recognition of its contribution to the dynamic and rich culinary history of the country. It cannot be denied that Pampanga is celebrated for its diverse and flavorful dishes, traditional cooking methods, and a strong culture of food innovation. This is consistent with the policy of the government to conserve, promote, and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources, as well as artistic creations.

However, while I recognize the noble intention of the authors, I cannot ignore the concerns regarding the declaration’s lack of historical basis, the absence of a thorough study that shows key performance indicators for such designation, and the possibility that the bill may offend sensibilities in other provinces that are equally proud of their culinary contributions.

As such, pursuant to Section 27(1), Article VI of the 1987 Constitution, I am returning herewith without my signature the enrolled Senate Bill No. 2797/House Bill No. 10634, entitled:

“AN ACT DECLARING THE PROVINCE OF PAMPANGA AS THE ‘CULINARY CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES.”

The Philippine culinary arts draws its origin from various cultures but displays regional characteristics. Our regions contribute their indigenous dishes with certain recipes that are best done in the areas of origin of their ingredients. All our culinary variations reflect the rich cultural diversity of a group of people scattered among the Philippine islands. Although the Filipino is derived from a common racial stock and a shared history that gave us our identity, our terrains and ethnic characteristics gave us certain differences.

I believe that one must travel our islands to identify the tastes and flavors that express our culture. Our regional variants and their recognizable nuances are what make the palette that is truly Filipino. All of our reputable culinary resources in the form of food literature and gastronomic professionals profess and celebrate the multitude and variety of our native recipes that are sourced from the different provinces and regions. Comparable to literature, visual arts, dance, or music, our culinary arts thrives in its diversity. This richness in terms of regional differences is the strength of our Filipino cuisine.

In consideration of the possibility that the enrolled bill may cause negative cultural implications, discrimination, regional bias, and loss of diversity, I am constrained to veto the abovementioned Enrolled Bill. Either way, I extend my unwavering support to the leadership of both Houses of Congress for working in unison with the Executive and I look forward to more beneficial legislation that would highlight our unique culture without sacrificing our diversity.

Watch Former-President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte first appearance at the ICC

On 10 February 2025, the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC applied for an arrest warrant against Mr Duterte for the crimes against humanity of murder, torture and rape. The Chamber assessed the material submitted by the Prosecution and found reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Duterte is individually responsible as an indirect co-perpetrator for the crime against humanity of murder, allegedly committed in the Philippines between 1 November 2011 and 16 March 2019.

The warrant of arrest against Mr Duterte was issued by the Chamber as “Secret” on 7 March 2025 and reclassified as “Public” on 11 March 2025. On 12 March 2025, Mr Duterte was surrendered to the International Criminal Court after being arrested by the authorities of the Republic of the Philippines in accordance with the warrant of arrest. He is currently in ICC custody.

The Philippines, an ICC State Party since 1 November 2011, deposited a written notification of withdrawal from the Statute on 17 March 2018. Under article 127 of the Statute, that withdrawal took effect on 17 March 2019. Nevertheless, the ICC retains jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed in the Philippines while the country was a State Party to the Statute.

For the sake of transparency, ICC made all documents available online including the Warrant of Arrest, so we can be informed on all the things that the ICC is doing.

The Pre-Trial concluded by stating that the confirmation of charges hearing to begin on 23 September 2025.

In addition, 40,000 additional locations have been identified for multicasting educational content, further improving digital learning accessibility nationwide.

Philippines and Saudi Arabia Launch New Job Category for OFW

The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has released guidelines for a new job category for Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia: Residential Support Worker/Cleaner. • Protection Against Domestic Work: The guidelines explicitly prohibit workers from being assigned to domestic work duties.
  • Welfare Desk Officer: MRC employers must designate a welfare desk officer to monitor the workers’ conditions and address any employment-related issues.

Reduced Risks and Improved Welfare:
Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan emphasized that this new framework aims to minimize labor complaints, welfare cases, and exit visa problems by streamlining the employer-employee relationship.

Continuous Expansion of Employment Opportunities:
Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac assured that the DMW, in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Human Resource and Social Development, will continue to expand employment opportunities for Filipino workers in various sectors.

DFA implementing Philippine e-Visa system in India.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has launched its e-Visa system for Indian nationals. Indian nationals may apply for e-Visas remotely by visiting the official website (evisa.gov.ph) and paying e-Visa fees online via direct bank transfer in a secure manner. This follows a successful trial period and aims to improve user experience. The soft launching and beta testing was done in August 2023.

Over 7,000 Indians have already used the system with positive feedback. The applicants were able to navigate the e-Visa system with general ease and reported positive feedback for its convenience, user-friendliness, and reliability.

Philippine e-Visa System is part of the Philippines’ digital transformation plan mentioned during the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 22 July 2024.
