National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag announced that Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to establish an office in the Philippines to speed up communication with authorities on taking down harmful content so Meta could be reached about all the posts officials ask them to remove immediately.

The decision followed complaints from the DICT and CICC that Meta had been hard to reach, lacking a full-fledged local presence. Meta was represented in the Singapore talks by Sarim Aziz, director for public policy in Southeast Asia, and Gio Tiongson, head of public policy in the Philippines.

Meta also committed to sharing data to combat nihilistic violent extremism, linked to the Tacloban and Zamboanga school shootings. Reports noted a CICC official said Meta previously took seven to nine minutes to remove the livestreamed Zamboanga shooting video.
