Disney releases Official Trailer of Live-Action Moana

The ocean chose her for a reason. 🌊

In “Moana,” Disney’s live action reimagining of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people. The film is directed by Emmy® and Tony Award® winner Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”); produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and executive produced by Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films “Moana” and “Moana 2.” “Moana” features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi and Mark Mancina, and an original score composed by Mancina. Audiences can experience the brilliant cinematic sights, sounds and songs of “Moana” exclusively in theaters on July 10, 2026.

Not sure how to react to the trailer, since the dialog clearly is the same as the animated film and the director/actors/actress did not add anything new to the live action version of the franchise.

Opening only in theaters Nov. 27, 2024, “Moana 2” reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, “Moana 2” features music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

Disney announces Moana 2 with release date of Nov. 27, 2024

Disney just announced that there will be a Moana 2 which will be release later this year. Disney originally announced that they will release a Moana series for Disney Plus but it was later redeveloped into a film.

The company also released a 16-second teaser that shows Moana, going to a new island and then blowing her “shell trumpet,” hinting that the film will pickup where the first movie left, she and her people embracing their voyaging heritage.

Here is the premise of the film;

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

The film will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. No word yet on who voice-cast are but it’s safe to say that Auliʻi Cravalho (Moana) and Dwayne Johnson (Maui) will be returning to reprise their role.

“Moana 2” opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.

Live action adaptation of Moana is in development

A live action adaption of Disney’s Moana is currently in development, this was shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared the news during Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting on April 3. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the 2016 animated film, with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. will produce the film with, with Native Hawaiian actor Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in both the 2016 film, will serve as an executive producer of the upcoming film.

In a pre-recorded message from Hawaii that included his youngest daughters. “I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen,” Johnson said in a statement. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”

Aside from its announcement, no other details have been mention regarding the live action Moana and it may take a couple of years before new updates about film becomes available.
