Balay Dako, a supposedly pet-friendly restaurant turns away customer with Aspin

Balay Dako, a purported “pet-friendly” restaurant, is in hot waters after what appears to be a discrimination on the staff’s part for turning away customers with Aspin, a local breed of dogs in the Philippines. a.k.a. Askal.

Ms. Lara L. Antonio posted a 1000 words post on her Facebook account regarding her encounter with the Balay Dako staff and how she and her companion where turned away because of her dog ‘Yoda’ is not a “shit tzus, labradors…” or a “golden retriever”.

Here’s a snippet of her.. now viral post;

We’ve eaten at Balay Dako before – we know it’s pet-friendly. Yoda has, in fact, been here before as well so we went there assuming everything’s okay. We get to the front of house and she hands me a paper with pet guidelines. It basically says small-medium sized dogs only and big dogs are not alllowed. It also says that dogs must be in a diaper, can’t be smelly, etc. and they will be turned away. I see “diaper” and I instantly think oh no we didn’t bring a diaper. So Mon asks the front of house, and she says it’s okay. There are diapers we can buy inside. She sees Yoda and Ari and nothing is amiss (for now).

Yoda, Ari and I are standing in front of the FOH, waiting to be seated and waiting for Mon to come out with the diapers when someone in black – staff – sees Yoda, goes inside, goes back out and then whispers something to the front of house.

Suddenly, FOH tells me that Yoda isn’t allowed inside. I ask “why”, she says “up to medium sized dogs only”. And I said huh? At this point, we’ve been standing in front of they door for over 10 minutes na, people going in and out greeting Yoda and Ari and she didn’t say anything to me. Tapos biglang she says ah bawal na yung isang dog. So I say, “she’s medium sized. We’ve been here before and no issues naman” and then !!! She said “ano pong breed niya?”

According to her Facebook profile, Ms. Lara L. Antonio is the Marketing Manager of Riot Games in the Philippines, Co-founder of Scene PH and a full-time fur-mom. It looks like those at Balay Dako, messed with the wrong fur-mom.

As of posting, Ms. Antonio’s post has more than 127K reactions and has been shared more than 61K times.

New Ray-Bans with Meta’s AI are Coming Soon

Newest Ray Ban will be the next best AI Assistant
A report, mentioned that Meta’s Llama 3 model will be integrated into Ray Ban. This will be an improvement to Meta’s previous collaboration with Ray Ban’s smart glasses.

Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer

The previous Ray Ban smart glasses featured a 12 MP camera, touch sensors for volume, voice control, and live-streaming capabilities. The smart glasses are currently available in the US, UK and Canada.

The development in the new AI model is thanks to Yann Lecun.

Meta’s New AI Developments
Yann Lecun is Meta’s chief AI scientist. His team is currently working on a video-based learning model for AI. V-JEPA (or Video Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture) is a model that aims to replicate the real-world observational capabilities of humans. The new learning model will “train” AI to have a foundation to give way to reasoning capabilities.

Yann LeCun, Meta AI Chief from meta.com

In their blog, Meta says that V-JEPA is all about helping AI develop a sense of “perception” to help improve AI assistants. AI assistants in smart glasses like the Ray Ban help provide contextual information for users of said products.

Yann Lecun’s interview with Lex Friedman revealed interesting developments regarding the  competitor to the ChatGPT model. In the interview (in video below), Yann Lecun mentioned that the company is always developing models that will be integrated into consumer products.

People will be excited to know that Meta will release two smaller Llama 3 models in the next few weeks this April. Meta launched Llama 2 in July of 2023. This year, Meta plans to release their newest AI model around the same time.

Aside from the release date, an interesting take is that Meta’s Llama 3 will reportedly match ChatGPT 4’s capabilities. The company is in a race with OpenAI as more and more companies join the AI hype including Google and Bing.

There are no official dates yet for the release for the new model. Aside from the AR glasses, Meta plans to integrate their AI models into Whatsapp.

From my first hour in using the web app, it feels exactly like the app but since you have it on a separate tab on your browser, I find myself using the web version more than the app. It remains to be seen if it can surpass the daily and even the monthly active users of X/Twitter, now that the desktop web version is live.

Meta to launch a web version of Threads

Threads, the twitter-clone of Meta, will soon launch a web version of the service. As of this posting, when you go to Threads.net, you will just get a QR code that when scanned will direct you to your phone’s app store to download the Threads app.

The web version is planned to be launch “early this week” but this is not totally final and could still change. Threads’ web version, a much-requested feature that may be exactly what Meta needs for users engagement within the service. The web version of Threads is currently undergoing internal testing at Meta Platforms and the official rollout may happen as early as the end of the week (August 25, 2023).

A reply by Adam Mosseri to a comment, further confirmed that the company is indeed working on a web version of threads;

Threads initially took the internet by storm and rapidly reached 100 million downloads, making it the fastest app to hit that milestone. However, user engagement has since declined, partly it’s believed due to the lack of a web version.

A web version of Threads is the next logical move by Meta to compete more effectively with platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter. It would be interesting to see whether these move will help Meta stop the ever-decreasing user engagement on Threads, which has gone done by approximately 85% since its peak shortly after launch.

Bea Alonzo now engaged to Dominic Roque

The 35 year old actress narrated that is was a “balmy afternoon in Las Casas,” during a photoshoot, when Roque proposed to her while “kneeling with a box in his hand.”

Bea Alonzo is regarded to as the “Queen of Movies” and is recognized for top billing several blockbuster successes at the box-office such as most notably, A Second Chance which is the fifth highest-grossing Filipino film in history, amassing ₱556 million. Movies and series under belt are Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, Magkaribal, A Love to Last, I Love Betty La Fea, Four Sisters and a Wedding and A Second Chance.

While Dominic Roque is a new comer when compared to Bea Alonzo, Dominic began modeling and endorsing several companies before heading into acting. He is a model of Cosmopolitan Talent Agency since 2008, and modeled for the Philippine clothing brand, Penshoppe.

Roque debuted onscreen in the soap opera Habang May Buhay playing Mark. He later took his first major role in the fantasy-drama series, Aryana in 2012. He played the character Hubert, wherein he co-starred and was paired with Ella Cruz.

Meta launches Threads, a twitter clone powered by Instagram

It’s finally here, Meta has officially launched Threads, the company’s version of twitter and will compete not only with twitter but with Bluesky, another twitter rival backed by Jack Dorsey, who is the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter.

Threads will use your Instagram account for login and will support posting up to 500-character text, photos, and up to 5 minutes videos. Threads is available on iOS and Android in 100 countries, except in EU, since the company needs to iron out the local data privacy regulations.

To signup for Threads, users must have an Instagram account, where their username and verification status will carry over. Threads users can then customized their profile independently.

Under the hood, while it is currently using Instagram infrastructure, Threads will soon offer support for ActivityPub — the same decentralized social networking protocol used by Mastodon and other federated apps. Once ActivityPub takes effect, Threads will be able to widen its reach, as Mastodon’s ecosystem engages 1.7 million active users.

Meta timed the launched of Threads, specially now that Twitter have imposed a number of restrictions including rate-limit and limiting access of twitter account on TweetDeck to verified users only.

This is not the first time that Meta/Facebook tried to copy twitter, in the early days of Facebook, the company took inspiration from twitter the hashtag, verified accounts, Vine, followers and real-time conversation, among others. It’s still too early to know if Threads will be successful in taking the air out of twitter’s space but if the Elon-led twitter continue to implode, Thread may become the twitter replacement.

Facebook renames its corporate brand to Meta

In a video posted on his official Facebook account, Mark Zuckerberg officially announced that the Facebook will change its corporate name to Meta. Meta will now be the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus. Zuckerberg’s announcement was made on the first day of the company’s annual Connect conference.

Here’s a video where Mark Zuckerberg introduce the company’s new name.

The new name will not affect any of Meta’s products or services, since this is more of a corporate restructuring similar to what Google made in 2015 when they changed its corporate name from Google to Alphabet, even though we still associate all of its company and subsidiary to “Google.”

Mark further explained what their vision for metaverse in a 1 hour video;

The change in Facebook’s corporate name was first reported by Alex Heath of The Verge. You can already read Meta’s official statement here.

Facebook is now back online and explains the reason for the outage

Facebook is now back, together with Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. After more than 6 hours of being down, the social media giant explained that the cause of the outage is a “configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.

Facebook with Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp went down last night leaving billions of users unable to communicate and unreachable, especially those who only exclusively use the services by the social media giant.

Mark Zuckerberg also posted an apology;

Facebook’s explanation did not provide much details on the outage, which to most of its users won’t even care about, as long as the service is back online.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down

If you’re Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp are unresponsive on your smartphone, then it you are not the only one, since all three services are currently down and Facebook already release a statement on twitter that they are aware of the issue and working to restore all three services.

A quick visit on Facebook.com, rather than the usual newsfeed, you will be greeted by a “Sorry, something went wrong.” message. While Instagram and Whatsapp, will give you the same “5xx Server Error.”

Here are the screenshots when I visit the websites.

On downdetector.com, it indicates that Facebook.com have been down for more than 2 hours now and the website received more than 125,00 reports at one time.

It’s unclear how long will the service be down and what is the caused of the downtime. I guess, we just need to wait and see.

WhatsApp to introduce disappearing messages

WhatsApp will introduce disappearing messages, a new feature that will allow users to automatically delete messages that are more than 7 days. The new feature will be rolling out to all WhatsApp users this month.

Here’s the full text of their announcement;

Introducing disappearing messages on WhatsApp

Today, WhatsApp messages often live on our phones forever. While it’s great to hold onto memories from friends and family, most of what we send doesn’t need to be everlasting.

Our goal is make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp.

When disappearing messages is turned on, new messages sent to a chat will disappear after 7 days, helping the conversation feel lighter and more private. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn disappearing messages on or off. In groups, admins will have the control.

We’re starting with 7 days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about. The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, and then disappear after you don’t. You can read more, including how to enable disappearing messages here.

We hope people enjoy disappearing messages, which will be rolling out to users everywhere this month.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday, a taxi operator that offers free ride as way to “give back” to commuters.

In a facebook post, Jeune San Juan wrote what she said “faith in humanity restored” after getting a free ride from one of Rich Brian taxi.

San Juan wrote;

Just a while ago in SMX we were deniiiied by the employee shuttle because it was already full (it started raining). We tried to get the first taxi when I saw this sign on the lower left side of the dashboard. FREE RIDE daw so we got inside. Akala namin scheme lang but it was really a free ride! Hindi siya fake taxi bwahaha. According to Kuya Eduardo, the driver, the owner of Rich Bian Taxi used to be a taxi driver himself and every end of the month all 10 cabs in the fleet go around giving free rides until 7pm. It’s his way of giving back daw now that he’s well off. They’ve been at it for a year already and the plan is to have 100 units. Here’s to faith in humanity restored and wishing the Rich Bian team good luck! Super happy din nila sa boss nila kasi every 15th, free boundary daw. And they’re always present sa mga family occasions ng owner. The best part? Nauna pa kami sa shuttle makarating ng office. Thank you Rich Bian!

To the owner of Rich Brian.. Thank you for restoring faith in humanity!
