While we were not aware of Rep. Joey Salceda’s filing of a bill to grant a broadcast franchise to ABS-CBN today, we are deeply grateful for his support and belief in ABS-CBN’s contributions and mission to serve the Filipino public.
We would also like to express our sincerest thanks to Reps. Gabriel Bordado Jr., Arlene Brosas, France Castro, Raoul Manuel, Johnny Pimentel, and Rufus Rodriguez, who have previously filed similar bills.
Albay Rep. Joey Salceda has filed House Bill 11252, which seek to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN, almost 5 years since the House of Representatives under the Duterte administration revoked the media giant’s bid to renew its franchise.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), during House deliberations on the ABS-CBN franchise in the previous Congress, certified that the franchise grantee did not violate ownership restrictions and did not have pending tax liabilities.
The non-renewal of the franchise, however, cost some 11,000 direct jobs. This representation also argued that the information asymmetries that resulted from the loss of an information source caused thousands of new COVID-19 infections during the critical 2020 period.
Prior to the rejection of the franchise renewal, some 36% of Filipinos derived their news and entertainment from the channel. ABS-CBN’s extensive regional network reach was also the source for news and updates on impending disasters, making the channel crucial then to disaster risk reduction strategies at the local level.
Given the merits of renewing the franchise, as well as the clarifications made by government agencies over certain allegations against the grantee, this representation urges Congress to reconsider the non-renewal of the franchise by the previous Congress.
It remains to be seen if the current House of Representatives under Marcos Jr. Admin will grant ABS-CBN to renew its franchise.

ABC-CBN just aired their Christmas station ID “Ikaw ang Liwanag at Ligaya”, the music video first aired on Tuesday, December 1 right after its flagship news program, TV Patrol.
The music video features that biggest ABS-CBN talents – both news and entertainment, including the Network’s top executives.
Lyrics written by Robert Labayen and Love Rose De Leon and brought to life by composer Thyro Alfaro.
Twenty Kapamilya singers have collaborated to perform the Christmas ID 2020 song: Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Ogie Alcasid, Morissette Amon, Bamboo, Janine Berdin, Darren Espanto, Vice Ganda, Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga, Jona, Moira, Martin Nievera, Elha Nympha, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Inigo Pascual, Angeline Quinto, Lea Salonga, Erik Santos, KZ Tandingan and Gary Valenciano.
There is a light inside all of us that never goes out. It will keep on burning no matter how dark the times have become because of the trials that test our spirit. This Christmas, we remember that God is this inexhaustible source, and the goodness He instilled in us will inspire us to pass on His light to others until our collective light wins and brings us real joy.
This is the lesson imparted by the stories featured in this year’s ABS-CBN Christmas ID “Ikaw ang Liwanag at Ligaya.” Take, for example, Arjanmar and Khaye Rebeta who proved that a pandemic could not dim their love story. Or of Moching Bueno, who found joy in serving frontliners despite suffering from his own loss. God’s infinite light also shines through the love of our family, as shown in the stories of Rodolfo Ariño, a PWD breadwinner and Peter Roncales who braved all odds to reunite with his loved ones. These and many other heartwarming stories will spark hope that a joyful Christmas is possible despite the challenges of the year 2020.

This will surely disappoint a lot of Darna fans, since it been reported that Darna film starring Jane De Leon will no longer push through.
The reason for the cancellation is that the production cost of the film has ballooned to PHP240 million, Php 140 million have already been spent and Php 100 million more is needed to complete the project.
The film as previously scheduled for a 2020 release but due to the delays that it experience, including the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the ABS-CBN and Star Cinema decided not to continue the project.
Liza Soberano was originally given the role but she had to leave the project in April due to an injury on her finger that required her to undergo surgery.
Created by writer Mars Ravelo and artist Nestor Redondo, Darna follows the story of Narda who becomes the titular superhero after swallowing a white stone that fell from the sky.
A good read if you want to be educated in ABS-CBN’s quo warranto case.
Lian Buan, reporting for Rappler;
In a 58-page comment submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday, February 24, ABS-CBN answered the accusations point-by-point as it fights for its franchise on all fronts.
At the Supreme Court, ABS-CBN hopes the justices would junk the petition outright for being the wrong venue, citing hierarchy of courts. The Supreme Court is not a trier of facts, and ABS-CBN said Calida’s case deals heavily with factual issues that should be resolved by either lower courts or different administrative agencies, and not the High Tribunal.
