Here’s the latest bracket for the Semis of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

Now that Quarter-Finals (QF) is done and we have now have a clear picture on who will compete for the semifinals of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and which is worth watching.

Team USA versus the Germans
The game will be this Friday, 8th of Sept at the MOA arena. Team USA advanced to the Semis after defeating ITALY in the most convincing manner (100 – 63). The Americans needed a strong win against the Italians after being handed by their only loss in the tournament by Lithuania. On the other side, Germany barely escape Latvia in the QF but remain to the one of the few undefeated team in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner, who are both NBA veterans, are the top performers of the team on points, rebounds and assists.

For Team USA, their top performers are Anthony Edwards, Mikal Bridges and Tyrese Haliburton and we cannot disregard the fact anyone in the team can explode and carry team to the finals, just like what Mikal Bridges did against Italy in the QF, where in scored a team high of 24 points and 6 rebounds.

Serbia versus Canada
The game will this Friday, 8th of Sept 16:45 local time at the MOA Arena. Serbia took care of the business by eliminating Lithuania and bringing them back down from cloud 9, after defeating USA in the last game of the second round.

Bogdan Bogdanovic and Nikola Milutinov are the top performer of Serbia. Bogdanovic is the top scorer in their game against Lithuania, chipping-in 21 pts with 4 rebs, while Nikola Milutinov is the towering presence in the middle and top rounder of the team.

For team Canada, we may very well call this Team B of NBA in FIBA, since 7 of the 12 players in the roster are playing in the NBA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the best player, leading in all stats; 25 pts/game, 7.2 rebs/game and 5 assists per game.

The winners for each game will face in the finals, while the two losing team will play for the 3rd place. Finals of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is scheduled on Saturday, Sept 10th at the MOA Arena.

Microsoft to remove WordPad in future release of Windows

Microsoft will soon remove WordPad in the coming release of Windows, this announcement was made by the software giant early this month after it published a “What’s New” article with a title – Deprecated features for Windows client.

In the article, Microsoft said that “Each version of Windows client adds new features and functionality. Occasionally, new versions also remove features and functionality, often because they’ve added a newer option. This article provides details about the features and functionalities that are no longer being developed in Windows client.”

The article further list at least 50 features and services available on Windows that will soon be removed in future update of the OS and one of them is the WordPad.

WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.

WordPad was introduced 28 years ago, as a small windows application that can edit, read, format and print document files with Rich Text Format (RTF), it is basically the stripped down version of MS Word, which is why it is not surprising the Microsoft recommended Microsoft Word, its paid word processor.

DICT and DFA Launches eVisa Application to Improve Visa Processing for Foreigners

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) with Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has launched an eVisa application system, which is expected to improve the visa processing experience for foreigners who wish to visit the Philippines.

The eVisa system was launched on August 24, 2023, at the DFA Office of the Consular Affairs in Pasay City. The launch was led by DICT Undersecretary for e-Government David L. Almirol Jr. and DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo.

“The eVisa is our clear message to the world that we recognize the benefits of digital technology for efficient and quality public service. With eVisa, we are adapting to the realities of modern travel, transforming the Philippines into a top-of-mind destination for business and leisure.” Undersecretary Almirol said in his speech.

The eVisa system allows foreign nationals to apply for a visa to the Philippines online. This eliminates the need to visit a Philippine embassy or consulate in person, and it can significantly reduce the time it takes to process a visa application.

The eVisa system will initially be available to Chinese citizens who can submit their Philippine visa requirements online as the eVisa system accommodates the Philippine Consular offices in Xiamen, Shanghai, Macau, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Guangzhou, Chongqing, as well as the Philippine Embassy in Beijing.

It is planned to be available for citizens of 15 countries, including Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The government plans to expand the list of eligible countries in the future.

By offering unparalleled convenience and improved public service delivery, eVisa is expected to facilitate ease of doing business and reinvigorate the country’s tourism sector. The salient features of the eVisa Application system include:

  1. Improved Efficiency: Allowing applicants to submit their required eVisa documents online from the comfort of their homes eliminates the need for physical visits to government offices. This not only saves time for the applicants but also streamlines the processing for the authorities.
  2. Fast Processing and Decision-Making: Embracing digital transactions and automation can significantly speed up the processing of visa applications.
  3. Secure Online Payments: The eVisa Application system provides secure online payment options, enhancing transparency and minimizing security risks.
  4. User-centric interface: The website’s user-friendly interface gives clear instructions, making sure applicants can go through the process easily and confidently.
  5. Real-time updates: Applicants can monitor the status of their application in real-time, reducing uncertainties and concerns.

This project shows the Philippine government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the efficiency and convenience of the visa application process for various international visitors. Further, eVisa is aligned with the global trend where various governments are adopting digital solutions to improve public services and operational efficiency.

The launching of the eVisa Application system is expected to pave the way for an optimized and seamless visa application experience that is poised to set new benchmarks in global best practices.

Other government agencies that took part in the development of the eVisa include the Department of Tourism, the Department of Justice, and the Bureau of Immigration.

Meta to launch a web version of Threads

Threads, the twitter-clone of Meta, will soon launch a web version of the service. As of this posting, when you go to Threads.net, you will just get a QR code that when scanned will direct you to your phone’s app store to download the Threads app.

The web version is planned to be launch “early this week” but this is not totally final and could still change. Threads’ web version, a much-requested feature that may be exactly what Meta needs for users engagement within the service. The web version of Threads is currently undergoing internal testing at Meta Platforms and the official rollout may happen as early as the end of the week (August 25, 2023).

A reply by Adam Mosseri to a comment, further confirmed that the company is indeed working on a web version of threads;

Threads initially took the internet by storm and rapidly reached 100 million downloads, making it the fastest app to hit that milestone. However, user engagement has since declined, partly it’s believed due to the lack of a web version.

A web version of Threads is the next logical move by Meta to compete more effectively with platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter. It would be interesting to see whether these move will help Meta stop the ever-decreasing user engagement on Threads, which has gone done by approximately 85% since its peak shortly after launch.

Reactions to Potato Corner Job Posts

The reactions to Potato Corner job ads are gold!

Potato Corner may have been fast in deleting the job post and publishing a reply, this is the most appropriate way to handle this situation but as we all know the internet is much faster in reacting to the post and these are just a few of them.

In no particular order! 🙂

Potato Corner under fire for insensitive Job Postings

Popular Filipino snack brand Potato Corner recently came under fire after a job posting for a service crew member went viral on social media. The post, which was shared on the company’s official Facebook page (now deleted), included a number of “inappropriate” qualifications, such as “good visual impact and pleasing personality,” “weight must be proportionate to height,” and “have clear complexion, eyesight and good set of teeth.”

The post quickly drew widespread criticism from netizens, who accused Potato Corner of discrimination and body shaming. In response, the company deleted the post and issued an apology.

“We deeply regret the oversight in the job posting,” Potato Corner said in a statement. “We, together with our business partners, are working to ensure that such incidents will not happen in the future.”

Potato Corner also said that it is “committed to fostering an inclusive environment” and that it “does not support or condone discriminatory hiring practices.”

In the wake of the Potato Corner incident, other companies have also been taking steps to review their own job postings and even created a job posts that’s a total opposite to Potato Corner’s postings. A good example is this job postings from Lola Nena’s;

The Potato Corner incident is a reminder that companies need to be more careful about the language they use in job postings, even though they mean well and it may even appear funny but in reality appear discriminatory and indifferent to other people.

Remembering Ninoy Aquino Jr. – Four Decades After His Sacrifice

A little background
Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was a Filipino politician who served as a senator of the Philippines and governor of the province of Tarlac. He was a leading politician from the opposition and was critical of then President Ferdinand Marcos. His arrest on the evening of September 22, 1972, signaled the implementation of then President Ferdinand Marcos’ Proclamation Number 1081 that placed the Philippines under martial law. In November 1977, a military court convicted him of murder and subversion charges and sentenced him to death. He went on a 40-day hunger strike to profess his innocence.

In 1980, he suffered a heart attack and was brought to the hospital. In a surprise visit, then First Lady Imelda Marcos told him he could seek treatment in the United States. While in Boston, Massachusetts with his family for three years, he delivered lectures that focused on his advocacy for the Philippines’ return to democracy. The text of the statement he had prepared to deliver upon his return to the Philippines later became available. He dared Marcos to “order my immediate execution or set me free.” He said, “national reconciliation and unity can be achieved but only with justice, including justice for our Muslim and Ifugao brothers.” He proposed that “the workingman must be given his just and rightful share of his labor, and to the owners and managers must be restored the hope where there is so much uncertainty if not despair.” He said that subversion could not be stopped with repression but with “a more equitable distribution of wealth, more democracy and more freedom.”

The Assassination
On August 21, 1983, Ninoy Aquino was assassinated on the tarmac of Manila International Airport upon his return from self-imposed exile in Boston. His death galvanized the political opposition and led to the EDSA People Power uprising in 1986. His widow Corazon became the 11th President of the Republic. The Filipino people ratified a new Constitution in 1987 to enshrine the restoration of democracy.

Today marks the 40th death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino. It is fitting that the country’s principal gateway to international travelers has been named after him. In 2004, the date of his assassination, Aug. 21, was declared a national holiday (Republic Act 9256). Ninoy Aquino’s spirit continues to shine as a beacon of hope, reminding us that the struggle for a better future is worth every effort.

Ninoy Aquino’s legacy is one that will always be remembered by Filipinos around the world. His courage and sacrifice inspired millions to fight for democracy and freedom in their own countries. As we commemorate his death anniversary today, let us remember his words: “The Filipino is worth dying for.”

Jobberbase Install Guide for Apache

Just archiving this here, since I always use Jobberbase as a reference CMS for job board.

You can download the PDF version of the steps here and the typical errors here.

Requirements
Before proceeding, make sure you have PHP 5+ and MySQL 4.1+ installed on your server. Also, Apache modulemod_rewrite has to be enabled and overriding default settings with .htaccess needs to be allowed.
If you are 100% sure that your server meets the requirements then you can skip the following lines and go directly to the first step, else please read on.

To mak sure you have at least PHP 5 and mod_rewrite active, create a file called phpinfo.php and paste the following code into it:

<?php phpinfo(); ?>

Upload it to your server and access it like this http://www.yoursitesnamecomeshere.com/phpinfo.php (Note: the path could differ in your case, specially if you’ve uploaded it into a subfolder)

The PHP version should appear in the page’s header. Make sure that it’s at least version 5.

Also, to see that you have mod_rewrite active, search in the page for the string mod_rewrite. If you don’t find it, contact your hosting and ask them to activate this module.

Install Procedure
If the requirements are met, follow these steps:

Download
Download the latest version from http://www.jobberbase.com/download (if you haven’t already done this) and unzip it.

Database setup
Before setting up the database, there are some things that you should be aware of: some hosting companies don’t allow you to have more than one database (usually in case of low-end (very cheap or free) hosting plans). If that’s your situation, follow the next step (Single database hosting), otherwise jump to step “Multiple database hosting”.

Single database hosting
If you know that this is your case, then please follow these steps:

You must decide for a string (you can use jb_, for example) which will be prepended to every jobberbase table name. You will have to set this string in the DB_PREFIX field that is described in step 3.

Open jobberbase.sql in a text editor of your choice and use its find & replace feature, as follows (Hint: in the find & replace dialog, there’s usually a button (Replace All, in case of Notepad) for replacing all the occurrences at once):

Replace all occurrences of CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS ` (note the ` char ) with CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `THE_STRING_THAT_YOU_DECIDED_ON (for example, CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `jb_).

Replace all occurrences of INSERT INTO ` with INSERT INTO `THE_STRING_THAT_YOU_DECIDED_ON (for example, INSERT INTO `jb_).

Save your changes and then open phpmyadmin, select your database and then import your jobberbase.sql file.

Skip step “Multiple database hosting” and continue with “Environment Setup”.

Multiple database hosting
Create a new database and import db/jobberbase.sql into it (usually done from within phpmyadmin).

Note: PHPMyAdmin instructions: Create a new database (example: jobberbase) in the database window and no need to change any of the default settings. Click Go and the database is live. Now click import from the list of menu items in the top section and select the jobberbase.sql file from your local machine. After refesh you should see the list of example content tables on the left side panel. If any of these things did not work for you then you need read the manual that comes with PHPMyAdmin and try again).

Environment and code setup
In order to install jobberBase, you need FTP or SSH access, to upload all the files. jobberBase is software that you host on your server.

Directory structure and permissions
Upload the contents of the public folder to your server. Some users make the mistake that they upload the public folder, but instead you should only upload the files and folders contained in the public folder.

Make sure that the following folders have write permission:
/uploads (uploaded resumes are temporarily stored here)
/_templates//_cache (smarty cache) – by default, YourTheme is a folder called default
/admin/_templates/_cache (smarty cache)
Note: if you are testing it locally using wampserver or MAMP then do this: In windows machine go to folder options and un-check the ‘read only’ option to enable write access. In Mac OSX running MAMP local server first make sure you have administrator access then check to make sure you have full access for the files by clicking ‘get info’ in right click or command click pop up menu for each folder.

Translations
Translations are located under the theme folder, i.e. /_templates//_translations.

Translations for text elements in the site (except pages, job category names and others such as these) are located in an .ini file, in the translations folder, the default being translations_en.ini.

Email translations are stored in an xml file, under _translations/_emails, the default being emails_en.xml.

Config and environments
A single jobberBase instance/codebase can run under multiple hosting environments. The config system allows you to define environments (such as the one on your local/development machine, a staging environment and the live/production server).

These environments have to be manually defined in _config/config.envs.php, as PHP arrays. The default environment (suited for local hosting) looks like this:

$__instances['local'] = array(
// should be a unique part of the url (or the entire url if you wish)
'prefix' => 'localhost',
// mysql credentials
'db_host' => 'localhost',
'db_port' => 3306,
'db_user' => 'root',
'db_password' => '',
'db_name' => 'jobberbase',
'db_prefix' => '',
// your site's full url
'app_url' => 'http://localhost/jobberbase/trunk/public/',
// error reporting
'ini_error_reporting' => E_ALL,
'ini_display_errors' => 'On',
// environment setting 1 (use 'local' for localhost/testing OR 'online' for live, production environment)
'location' => 'local',
// environment setting 2 (use 'dev' together with 'local' in the previous setting OR 'prod' with 'online')
'environment' => 'dev',
//use 'apache_mod_rewrite' for Apache hosting or 'iis_url_rewrite', 'iis_isapi_rewrite' for IIS hosting
'rewrite_mode' => 'apache_mod_rewrite'
);

Each environment is defined as part of the $__instances array, with a unique key (e.g. local).

Note: Only change db_prefix if you’ve followed step 2.2.1 (single database hosting).

Note: some users are having trouble setting the db_host. To find out your database host, either ask your hosting company or login to phpmyadmin and you should have somewhere in the upper area the string Server and next to it an URL or IP. That’s what you should put as database host.

Testing the site
If you’ve went through all previous steps, you should be done.

Open up a browser and type in your site’s URL (e.g. http://www.yoursitesnamecomeshere.com/).

Admin
Assuming that your Jobberbase installation is located at http://www.yoursitesnamecomeshere.com/, you can access the administration panel by visiting http://www.yoursitesnamecomeshere.com/admin/.

This section is password protected, the username being admin and the default password admin.

After the first login, be sure to change your password!

In the administration panel you can:

change settings regarding site details, job pagination, mailing options, url options and lot more
view all the jobs, activate the new ones, delete jobs, edit jobs, post a new job
change the cities (add/edit/delete) that are included by default in Jobberbase
change the categories (add/edit/delete/reorder) that are included by default in Jobberbase

Discord.io suffers data breached and will shutdown the service

Discord.io, a third-party service that enables owners of Discord servers to create customized, personal Discord invites, has announced that it would shut down until further notice following a “major data breach” from “unknown actors” on Monday evening.

The breach has affected 760,000 users and the stolen information could include your discord.io username and your Discord ID, your email-address, your billing address, and a salted and hashed password if you signed up in 2018 or earlier.

Payment details are said to be safe because all payments are processed through PayPal and Stripe and the company does not store any payment information on their servers, and this information was not leaked, the company said in an article posted on their website.

Discord.io has confirmed the authenticity of the breach, by an entity acting under the name “Akhirah.” It is important to know that Discord.com is not affiliated with discord.io, a spokesperson from Discord told Stackdiary, “Discord is not affiliated with Discord.io. We do not share any user information with Discord.io directly and we do not have access to or control of information in Discord.io’s custody.”

Discord has revoked the oauth authentication tokens for any Discord user that has used Discord.io, so that app can no longer perform actions on behalf of those users until they re-authenticate3. Affected Discord users should change their passwords and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).

You can read the full statement of Discord.io on their website – Discord.io has suffered a data breach.

The website’s official twitter also encourages users to directly contact their support team, in connection of the breached.

Warrior Nun to Return as a Film Trilogy

The popular Netflix series Warrior Nun will return as a film trilogy, it was announced on Tuesday. The series, which was based on the comic book series of the same name, was canceled by Netflix after two seasons. However, the series’ fans were vocal in their support for a renewal, and their efforts have paid off.

The Warrior Nun series premiered in 2020, and Season 2 of the show earned a 100% critics score and a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes — the highest ever for a Netflix original at that time. But a month after the premiere of Season 2, the show was abruptly cancelled by s.

Mark Gordon Pictures and Propagate Content have been tagged to produce the trilogy. The creative team from the series, including showrunner Simon Barry, will return for the films.

“I am very happy to announce that Warrior Nun is coming back as a trilogy of motion pictures. Once again, a trilogy of feature films. Three.” said Barry. “The fans have been incredibly supportive of the series, and we are excited to give them the ending they deserve.”

The film trilogy will pick up where the series left off, with Ava (Alba Baptista) and the Order of the Cruciform Sword continuing their fight against the forces of darkness. The films will also explore new storylines and characters from the comic book series.

The news of the Warrior Nun film trilogy is a major win for fans of the series. The show was praised for its action, humor, and strong female characters. The films have the potential to be even more successful than the series, as they will have a larger budget and a wider audience.

Checkout the video announcement by Dean English the show’s executive producer.

The film trilogy is expected to begin production in 2024. It’s unclear if the Warrior Nun films will still be on Netflix but I won’t be surprise if it will have a limited theatrical release then later be available in the big 3 streaming services like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and even Netflix.

Warrior Nun follows the story of Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), “a 19-year-old quadriplegic orphaned teen, who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back, giving her superpowers as the chosen Halo-Bearer. She discovers she is now part of the ancient order of demon-hunting that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.”

Season 1 and Season 2 of Warrior Nun is available in Netflix.

Here’s the official trailer of the Warrior Nun season 2.

Brazilian Superstar Neymar Jr. Joins Saudi Club Al-Hilal in Two-Year Deal

Brazilian superstar Neymar has joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in a two-year deal, the club announced on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023. Neymar, who had been with Paris Saint-Germain since 2017, leaves the French club after scoring 118 goals in 173 appearances. He won the Ligue 1 title with PSG five times, but the club was never able to win the Champions League, which Neymar had been hoping to achieve.

After signing his transfer contract, Neymar Jr. stated that he was very happy, winning titles and friends in Europe and he enjoyed special times. Being a global player, always wanted to test himself in new challenges and opportunities in new places. He said, “I want to write a new history, and the Saudi Professional League has tremendous energy and quality players and is in great growth at the moment, so I believe it is the desired place.”

He added, “Al-Hilal is a giant club with fantastic fans, and it is the best in Asia. This gives me a feeling that it is the right decision for me at the right time with the right club, i love winning and scoring goals, and I plan to continue doing that in Saudi Arabia and with Al-Hilal.”

Al-Hilal is one of the most successful clubs in Saudi Arabia, holding 66 official titles. The club is also a regular participant in the AFC Champions League, and has won the tournament four times.

Neymar’s arrival is a major coup for Al-Hilal and is expected to boost the club’s chances of winning more trophies and retaining their leadership in the coming years. The Brazilian is one of the most popular and marketable players in the world, and his signing is sure to attract attention to the Saudi Professional League.

The transfer fee for Neymar is reported to be around $90 million, making it the most expensive transfer in Saudi Arabian football history.

Neymar’s move to Saudi Arabia has been met with mixed reactions. Some have criticized the move, saying that it is a waste of money for a club in a relatively small league. Others have defended the move, saying that it is a good opportunity for Neymar to experience a new culture and challenge himself in a new league.

Disney+ and Hulu Subscription Price to Increase this October

Disney has announced that it will be increasing the prices of its streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu, in October. The ad-free version of Disney+ will increase from $10.99 to $13.99 per month, while the ad-supported version will remain at $7.99 per month. The ad-free version of Hulu will increase from $14.99 to $17.99 per month, while the ad-supported version will remain at $7.99 per month.

The price increase is effective for new subscribers starting on October 12, 2023, and for existing subscribers starting on November 1 2023.

Disney has cited rising content costs as the reason for the price increase. The company has been investing heavily in new content for its streaming services, including original series and movies, as well as live sports. The price increase is likely to be met with some resistance from subscribers, but it is not unexpected. Streaming services have been raising prices in recent years, as they compete for subscribers and content.

“The strong momentum of our ad-supported plans in the U.S. demonstrates the importance of providing consumers with choice, flexibility and value,” said Joe Earley, President, Direct-to-Consumer, Disney Entertainment. “We are excited to expand that offering in more markets across the globe, including in Europe and Canada, and to launch a new premium duo bundle of ad-free Disney+ and Hulu this Fall, as we take steps toward making extensive Hulu content available via Disney+ later this year for Bundle subscribers.”
